EOS-Next devices are small variable-brightness lamps supported by the working glasses used by dentists and surgeons worldwide.

Doctors' need is to be able to smartly manage the different brightness levels of the LED: hence Univet Connect, the App that allows for quick and easy control of the EOS-Next illuminator thanks to a simple and intuitive graphical interface, which allows the user to choose directly from the smartphone among the 5 different brightness levels of the EOS-Next device.

EOS-Next is a made-in-Italy product from Univet, equipped with a bluetooth module, which today presents itself as an extension of magnifying systems for the field of global dentistry designed to ensure the user illuminates the field of view in the best possible way, improving clinical performance and the final result.

The Challenge.

Univet Connect stems from Univet's desire to enable professionals using EOS-Next to control their devices via smartphones and iPhones, with a simple tap or through voice commands.

Prior to the release of the App, control of EOS-Next was left to the physical buttons on the device, an impractical mode in the outpatient clinic during examinations and surgeries on patients when having sterilized gloves or handling instrumentation.

For this reason, Univet asked us to design a viable alternative to the physical remote control to simplify the daily routine of this category of demanding and detail-oriented professionals.

The Solution.

The design of Univet Connect, an Internet of Things (IoT) App, posed two main critical issues:

  • communication with the device via BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy).
  • the creation of a wake word (literally, the word that "wakes up" and thus puts the App into action) to activate voice commands

Thanks to a library and constant discussion with the BLE designer, these obstacles were overcome and the App took shape.

We chose a cross-platform technology solution making use of the Flutter framework, and it was necessary to involve third-party companies for integration with a platform for business process management, firmware for EOS-Next devices, and interaction via Bluetooth.

In the course of the project implementation, we managed a change of direction related to server-side communication, as well as changes in terms of user interface (UI) and functionality.

The first version of the IoT App has a medium to high degree of complexity, largely attributable to communication with the device via Bluetooth.

Results Collected from the App.

The end users of the App are dental doctors and surgeons who have one or more EOS-Next devices.

The App has made it possible to register device users internationally and collect data accordingly, which, in the future, will be instrumental in improving the App with increasingly targeted interventions and faster assistance.
